GungHo's Puzzle and Dragons [Free] has been an absurd success, with it being the #3 top grossing game in App Store history, according to App Annie. This is despite the game being "only" #98 in the top grossing apps on iPhone in the US. To wit, the game has been massive in Asian territories. But it's quite clear that there's potential there for the game to be making lots of money in the west, if eastern players have sunk lots of time and money into it. So, GungHo has just launched a TV campaign in the US this week. I saw an ad on Adult Swim on Monday night, and other networks should start seeing ads for the game:
Now, a TV ad campaign isn't a guarantee of success, but it's a good way to jump-start a game and to get it in the eyes of more people. Games like Clash of Clans [Free] and Game of War [Free] in particular used TV ad campaigns to become games that pull in a million dollars per day. GungHo has a game that monetizes. But can it monetize in the west" They're taking a shot at it. Heroes Charge [Free] certainly did well enough for itself, but didn't shoot up to a consistent top 10 game after a TV ad blitz, including a Super Bowl ad, so it's not a guarantee...but it'll be interesting to see if it works.
