VHS Story is a game that allows scary amounts of control over the life of your fighter. The easiest way to understand the game is to imagine a combination of the need system from The Sims, and the stat system from Game Dev Tycoon. While this may sound like an odd combination, it turns out that it ends up creating a game that is not only unique, but quite entertaining as well.
After the slightly confusing opening cutscene, you are thrust into control of the life of a street fighter, which contains various responsibilities.Maintaining your needs, such as happiness, energy, hunger, and health, is only a small part of what VHS Story has to offer. You will find yourself going to work in order to earn money for food, transport, and new workout equipment, all which are purchasable through stores that can be accessed by heading into the game's overworld. The game becomes increasingly complex once you realize exactly how much you are responsible of taking care of, from your needs to your training, all while making sure you are earning enough money for food and other expenses.
VHS Story, while featuring a fairly nice amount of complexity, almost feels overwhelming in a way. It is extremely difficult to manage your needs based on the rate that they decrease, while also making sure that you are getting in a good amount of training. One of the features that is questionable would be the idea that as each day passes, you lose stat points without explanation of what you have done to cause them to disappear. This ends up making it nearly impossible to keep your stats up if you are also making sure your fighter is happy and healthy.
