With Rocksteady finishing up their Batman: Arkham trilogy earlier this year, Sid Shuman of the PlayStation Blog wanted to know what’s next for the caped crusader, so he sat down with Ames Kirshen, Vice President of Product Development for the Arkham and DC Comics games at Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.
In the interview, Kirshen first touched upon how Batman video games have been able to thrive, whereas other super heroes have struggled:
You have to understand and respect the core essence of the franchise, but you can?t be a slave to every single aspect of its history or continuity in translating it for the gaming medium.
More importantly, you have to have the talent, vision, and passion from the development teams to make great games and treat them as they would an original IP. We?ve been blessed at WBIE with studios and talent such as Rocksteady, NetherRealm, and TT Games.
Calling Batman “one of the cornerstone IPs for Warner Bros,” Kirshen says they were finally able to realize the full of potential of the character with the Arkham series. When asked what’s next for Batman, he wouldn’t drop a hint:
We don?t have anything to talk about at this time, but the possibilities are endless with a character as dynamic and beloved as Batman.
Aside from Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham games, Batman has recently appeared in Arkham Origins from WB Games Montreal, the LEGO Batman titles from TT Games, and Injustice: Gods Among Us from NetherRealm.
Looking at the rest of the DC Comics characters out there, Kirshen isn’t ruling anyone out to star in a future game, but “it boils down to honing in on the IPs that map the strongest, genre-wise, to what fans are interested in seeing and playing. From there, it?s about getting the development studios with the strongest passion for those IPs to make the games.”
