Well I guess this shouldn't really come as a surprise, but Angry Birds 2 [Free], the official proper for-realsies-this-time sequel to the blockbuster mobile hit Angry Birds has already been downloaded over a million times just 12 hours after becoming available. Now, that's impressive and all, but there are a couple of caveats to this particular statistic.
First of all, this game is free, unlike the original Angry Birds proper and its many spinoffs in the main series. As any mobile developer will tell you even getting a large number of people to download your game for FREE can be a daunting task, but the point here is that there's no barrier of entry to Angry Birds 2, so of course people will be downloading it like crazy. There's nothing to lose! The second factor is just the sheer number of iOS users in the world. It's pushing 1 billion if it hasn't hit that mark already, so while a million is nothing to sneeze at, it's still just a fraction of what it potentially could be based on how many iOS devices are out there.
But hey! I'm not here to be a Debbie Downer, having your game downloaded a million times in just half a day is a really impressive feat, no matter the circumstances. I personally account for one of those downloads, though I haven't had the chance to spend any time with Angry Birds 2 just yet. Impressions from folks in our forums are pretty mixed though, with most everyone praising the new graphics and features of the game but plenty of people being turned off by the strict energy timers in the game.
What I'll really be interested to see is not just initial download numbers for Angry Birds 2, but how many people end up sticking with the game for the long haul. Will interest persist after this initial launch phase" Who knows! However, if you're curious yourself about Angry Birds 2, feel free to give it a download and check it out and do your own part in contributing to these already massive download statistics.
